Micromobility Policy FAQ

The policy establishes a comprehensive ban on electronic, motorized, battery-powered, and similar micromobility devices on the University of Miami Coral Gables Campus.

The policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, and visitors on the University of Miami Coral Gables Campus.

Micromobility devices include motorized or battery-powered personal transportation devices such as e-scooters, e-bikes, hoverboards, electric skateboards, RipStiks, Segways, and similar devices.

No. Micromobility devices may not be operated, parked, stored, charged, staged, secured, left unattended, or brought onto University Property unless specifically exempted by the policy.

The University has designated limited micromobility staging areas on the perimeter of campus. Micromobility devices may only be parked in these designated locations. Parking, storing, staging, securing, or leaving devices unattended anywhere else on University Property is prohibited.

No. E-bikes are considered micromobility devices and are prohibited on University property, regardless of whether the electric-assist feature is activated or being used.

No. Shared, rented, dockless, app-based, and vendor-provided motorized micromobility devices are not authorized on University Property unless expressly approved in writing by the University.

Yes. Authorized University equipment used for official University business and other devices expressly approved in writing by the University are exempt from the policy.

Yes. Traditional non-motorized bicycles and other non-motorized personal transportation devices are permitted, subject to applicable University rules and posted restrictions.

No. Micromobility devices are prohibited on University Property.

No. Micromobility devices and related batteries may not be brought into, stored in, or charged inside any University building or structure. This includes detached batteries that are not connected to a device.

No. Use of University electrical outlets, exterior outlets, power sources, or charging infrastructure for these devices or batteries is prohibited.

Registration does not authorize the possession, operation, storage, or use of a prohibited Micromobility Device on University Property. However, registration with the University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) is encouraged, as it may assist in identifying and recovering a device in the event of theft.

Violations may result in warning, citation, removal, immobilization, impoundment, fees, cost recovery, restriction of privileges, referral to University administrative processes, or referral to law enforcement or fire-safety officials.

Yes. The University may immediately remove, immobilize, or impound any device that violates the policy or presents a safety, accessibility, operational, or life-safety concern.

Violations may result in citations, impoundment fees, storage fees, cost recovery charges, and additional penalties for repeat offenses.

Contact University of Miami Police Department or Parking and Transportation. The owner may be required to provide proof of ownership, pay applicable fees, and remove the device from University property before the device is released.
